About the Blythewood Transportation Study

The Blythewood Transportation Study is evaluating existing and future transportation conditions along the US 21 and Blythewood Road corridors.

As the community continues to grow, transportation infrastructure must evolve to meet the needs of residents, businesses, schools, and visitors. The purpose of this study is to identify opportunities for improvements that enhance:

  • Traffic flow and mobility
  • Safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists
  • Accessibility and connectivity
  • Corridor functionality
  • Long-term transportation planning

Community input is a critical component of the study and will help guide future recommendations.

What Happened at Public Meeting #1?

The June 16 Open House provided an opportunity for community members to learn about the study, review existing conditions, ask questions, and provide direct feedback to the project team.

Representatives from CMCOG, SCDOT, and Stantec were available throughout the evening to answer questions and discuss transportation challenges and opportunities within the study area.

The meeting was designed so attendees could move throughout the room at their own pace, review information, and engage directly with project team members.

What Information Was Shared?

Several informational exhibits were available to help attendees better understand current conditions and future transportation needs.

Existing Conditions Exhibits

Participants reviewed displays showing:

  • Study Area Map
  • Existing Land Use
  • Existing Bicycle Facilities
  • Existing Sidewalk Facilities

These exhibits provided an overview of the corridor and highlighted how current development patterns influence transportation needs throughout the area.

Traffic and Safety Exhibits

Additional displays focused on:

  • Existing Traffic Volumes
  • Existing Capacity Analysis
  • Historical Crash Patterns
  • 2050 No-Build Capacity Analysis

These exhibits helped illustrate current traffic conditions and projected future conditions if no transportation improvements are implemented.

Community Input Was the Focus

While the exhibits provided important information, the most valuable part of the evening was hearing directly from the community.

Interactive Corridor Maps

Large aerial maps of the study area allowed participants to identify specific locations where they have experienced:

  • Traffic congestion
  • Safety concerns
  • Pedestrian challenges
  • Bicycle connectivity issues
  • Operational concerns
  • Desired transportation improvements

Participants placed comments directly on the maps, helping the project team better understand transportation challenges from the community’s perspective.

Visual Preference Survey

Attendees also participated in a visual preference exercise where they identified transportation features and enhancements they would like to see considered in the future.

Examples included:

  • Improved pedestrian facilities
  • Bicycle accommodations
  • Enhanced street lighting
  • Landscape medians
  • Corridor beautification
  • Safety enhancements

The project team is currently compiling and evaluating these responses.

What We Heard

The study team received valuable feedback from community members regarding:

  • Traffic congestion
  • Safety concerns
  • Future growth impacts
  • Pedestrian accessibility
  • Bicycle connectivity
  • Roadway improvements
  • Community character and aesthetics

Every comment received at the meeting will be reviewed as part of the study process.
